The clients wanted a complete new planting design for this large London garden. They wanted to keep their extensive lawn, but the long borders were extended and widened to accommodate a layered, low-maintenance planting scheme which would provide interest throughout the year.
The soil is light and has a tendency to dryness, and was improved with masses of manure, so plants were carefully selected that would thrive in free-draining soil. Sunny areas are anchored with evergreens woven with swathes of colourful perennials repeated along the borders. Patterns of spikes, domes and grasses give contrasting heights, textures and changes of scale. Shady corners are lit with white, flowering plants, spring bulbs and the interplay of different foliage.
